Samhain & Singing Bowls: The Art of the Fade
As the year turns inward, we explore Samhain through the fading resonance of crystal singing bowls, introduce our Earthsong set, and share a simple listening practice to try at home.
What a singing bowl teaches us about listening in the dark half of the year.
The light has thinned and the leaves let go without ceremony. The year turns inward, and we are invited to turn with it.
In Irish tradition, Samhain marks the beginning of winter, with celebrations beginning on the eve of 1 November: a soft seam in the calendar where the familiar quiets long enough for something older to be heard. In our sound sanctum we think of it as the beginning of the listening season. The candles are lit and our practice becomes less about reaching out and more about receiving.
Listening into the fade
A singing bowl is a quiet teacher of this season. Strike it, and the tone rises, full and resounding, then begins to fade. This gradual fading is known as decay: the slow passing of a sound back into silence.
We tend to pay attention to the bright beginning, the moment of striking. But we have come to love the fade most of all. With our crystal bowls, we find ourselves staying with the sound as it grows quieter, listening until we can no longer quite tell where the tone ends and the silence begins.
As the tone fades, we sometimes notice the wish to strike again, to stay a little longer with the sound. There is something to explore in waiting, too: following those last vibrations and listening into the quiet that follows. Perhaps the fade is not an ending at all. It is where the real listening begins.
A cauldron of sound
This autumn Earthsong, our new harmonised set of three crystal singing bowls, came together. At its heart is a deep green Chrysoprase bowl, the colour of moss and ivy. Cradled in two hands it looks like a small cauldron, which feels just right for Samhain.
In Welsh legend, Cerridwen prepares a cauldron of inspiration and knowledge, which must brew for a year and a day. The cauldron has long been a symbol of transformation: what goes in is changed before it comes out. That is how this bowl feels to play. We bring it the year's tiredness and worries, and the sound gathers them, turns them and lets them go.
Our past trails behind us and tells a story. But for these few moments, we can listen to what is here.
Sound only ever happens now. A note cannot be played in the past. Perhaps that is why a sound bath can feel like such a relief: for a little while, there is nowhere else to be.
A candle in the dark
The prayer known as the Prayer of St Francis asks: where there is darkness, let me bring light. We hear that as an invitation to light a candle within the dark, without needing to banish it.
That is how we feel about playing through the darker months. The bowls do not fight the long nights. They keep us company in them. A warm tone in a cold room is a small, lit candle.
Try this at home: a Samhain listening practice
Ten minutes, any evening around Samhain. A bowl is lovely, but a chime, a glass or even a hum will do.
-
Light a candle and dim the other lights. Sit comfortably and let your breath settle, a little longer on the out-breath.
-
Name one thing you are ready to let go of this year. You don't need to say it aloud. Just hold it gently.
-
Strike or play once, softly. Follow the sound with your whole attention as it blooms and begins to fade.
-
Listen all the way down. When you think the sound has gone, keep listening for a few breaths more. Often there is a little more than you expect.
-
Rest in the silence it leaves. Notice how it feels to let the sound go without reaching for it.
-
Repeat three times, without needing anything particular to happen.
If you have no instrument, hum an easy "mmm" on one long out-breath and let it trail away to nothing. Your own voice fades beautifully too.
However this season meets you, we hope you find a little space to let something soften, and a little resonance to carry with you into the quiet.
With warmth, candlelight and sound,
Casey & Kate
